6-14-09, Weston- With a little help from the National League Cardinals, the Cubs, and their win against the Mets on Sunday, the Rockies clinched a championship berth in this Saturday's big showdown. The Rockies defeated the Mets 11-4 at Burchard Park in a must win situation to continue their little league season. The Mets got off to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in Sunday's game. In the bottom of the first, Rockies hitters showed discipline at the plate by drawing three consecutive walks, loading the bases. Rockie Hunter Klutz stepped up to the plate and while at bat, the Rockies scored two quick runs on wild pitches. Klutz singled in Rockie Charlie Siegrist, took second on a wild pitch. Then Rockie Chase Peatman hit an RBI single, scoring Klutz. The Rockies ended the inning up 4-1.
The Mets would add another run in the top of the third, Alan Blaesser scored, cutting the Rockies lead by 2. In the bottom of the third, the Rockies hitters continued their discipline, drawing 5 walks and two hits for a total of seven runs, giving the Rockies a commanding 11-2 lead. The Mets would rally back in the fourth, with hits from Met Chris Dinno and Will Pettirossi, making the score 11-4, Rockies, after three innings.
Rockie pitcher Brad Peters would come in and close the door in the top of the fifth, getting out of a bases loaded jam to end the inning. It would be Peters again to close the sixth, with help from the Rockies defense of Charlie Siegrist and Chase Peatman to end the game with an 11-4 victory. With the Rockies victory over the Mets, and the Cardinals victory over the Braves, and the Cubs victory over the Giants, the Rockies found themselves in a "win and in" situation. "I'm happy for the kids. We started the season with a few objectives," said Rockies Head Coach Bob Peatman. "The first was to have fun, the second was to create better baseball players and I think we achieved those goals. The third was, if things worked out, to make it to the championship game and we did. We look forward to it. It should be a lot of fun for the kids."

6-6-09, Weston- Wildcat Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Chris White told his team at the start of the season,"I wanted them to enjoy being a member of the varsity team and that the team philosophy would be, 'learn a little, laugh a lot'," he said. Laugh and learn the Wildcats did, as they took their tournament run all the way to the MIAA Division 3 North Finals.
The Wildcats lost 3-2 to Hamilton-Wenham at Newton South High last Saturday in the sectional finals. In a hard fought Second Doubles match, the Wildcat team of Junior David Borczuk and Sophomore Jason Mazzella held court in a 3 set marathon that ended in defeat for Weston. Hamilton-Wenham's brothers team of David and Stuart Rowe rallied back from championship point to claim victory. Of the 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 doubles match, Sunday's Boston Herald quoted Hamilton-Wenham coach Joe Mather as saying, "It was one of those matches where you wouldn't have felt too bad if you lost, but it sure did feel good to win."
The Wildcats victories came from Sophomore Will Spector in First Singles, 6-2, 6-2, and Senior Co-Captian Jeff Greenberg in Third Singles 6-1, 7-5. Wildcat Second Singles Senior Mike Glen was defeated by Hamilton-Wenham's Chase Curtis, 3-6, 3-6, and First Doubles Wildcats teammates Junior Duncan Van Nest and Sophomore Matt Gorelik were defeated by Hamilton-Wenham's Nick Petrou and Ian McCracken, 6-7, 4-6. Coach White has nothing but praise for his team, noting that his team has consistently played well and worked hard for the position they played in. He said before the match, "They know that Saturday's sectional championship match will be a tough test of the teams talent and depth. I'm confident, but more important that they are confident in their ability on the court." After the match Coach White remarked, "All my guys played hard and with heart. This match was so close it really was just a matter of a couple of points either way in the doubles matches that decided the final outcome. I know the players are disappointed with the final result but they can hold their heads high. They fought as hard as any coach could ask today. I am very proud of them. They had a terrific year."
Congratulations to graduating Seniors Co-Captians, Mike Glen and Jeff Greenberg and many thanks for your dedication to the Wildcat Boys Tennis program during your years at Weston High. Wildcat Weekly wishes you both the best of luck.
